How to Start and Finish Strong: The importance of making decisionsJun 20, 2022
It goes without saying that in order to finish the race, you actually have to start!
As I talk about in my Foundational Mini Mindset Course, the worst decision you can make in your health journey is to NOT MAKE A DECISION AT ALL!
Whether you want to start a new program, change your sleep routine, eliminate dairy, or see a practitioner about some nagging health symptoms - you actually have to DECIDE to DO the thing!
DO YOU STRUGGLE TO MAKE DECISIONS?
WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?
- Are you afraid of making the "wrong" decision?
- Do you fear others' judgment of you and your decisions?
- Do you seek validation from your friends, spouse, teachers, doctors, etc?
Don't get me wrong, I highly recommend you talk big decisions over with those who will be affected by them (your spouse, family, roommate, etc.).
I would never suggest for you to make rash decisions unaware of how it will affect those closest to you (although, this can get a bit hairy to if your motivation here is wonky, i.e. you're a people pleaser).
But tarrying and ruminating over a decision endlessly will get you nowhere!
It's mentally exhausting.
It can be frustrating for those around you.
And it can be a HUGE waste of time and energy.
But here's the thing....
You probably know the "right" decision to make, but are just hesitant to make a decision for reasons you likely haven't explored.
And that's why I'm here ... to help you EXPLORE any hidden thoughts, feelings or otherwise that may be keeping you from experiencing your best, healthy self.
This IS ABSOLUTELY POSSIBLE by the way...
DECIDE TO LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE
You CAN be healthy, joyful, free of worry, and living your best life...
IF YOU DECIDE TO....
I do want to qualify this a bit though.
You could be in the midst of your best laid plans - making decisions, acting imperfectly (or perfectly) on them, and evaluating your results like a champ!
THEN BANG! Something happens that throws you off kilter and you find yourself back at the beginning (or at least closer to the beginning than you want to be.)
You generally can't plan for these things.
BUT YOU CAN DECIDE TO MAKE THE BEST OF IT.
You do what you can IMPERFECTLY and you'll still be making some headway, regardless of how slow or rocky it may feel.
Don't beat yourself up!
Don't quit. Take a hiatus if you need to, but don't quit.
I talk about an example from my own life in my Foundational Mini Mindset Course, when I had to take a hiatus from exercising for 9+ months during my recent pregnancy.
For me, this is a LOOOOOOONG time to go without working out. VERY LONG!
BUT... I was okay with this because I KNEW that once our life settled down and I got a handle on some other things (like my diet and mental capacity to handle life with 5 kids), I would pick it back up again.
And here I am, a year later getting plenty of activity, working out most days for 10-15 minutes, and am five pounds from my pre-baby weight (actually, I weigh less than my pre-baby weight!)
So let's land this ✈️
JUST MAKE A DECISION
Whatever it is that you need to do right now for your health.... MAKE THAT DECISION!
Once that decision is made, you will be amazed how much weight is lifted from your shoulders and your mind!
Yes, now you have to act on it, but you'll be surprised how much more mental space and energy you have to do so!
Our brains can only handle so much, and ruminating on a decision for days on end will result in decision fatigue, even if you haven't made the decision!!
So, getting that decision off your chest and starting to take imperfect action on it ASAP will get you going in the right direction, my friend!
YOUR ACTION ITEM:
1. DECIDE what your TOP HEALTH GOAL is... this should be something that is weighing on your mind AND your body:
- Losing your extra weight for good
- Getting a handle on your autoimmune issue (Hashimoto's, Lupus, Lyme disease, etc.)
- Trying to recover your energy and get out of the constant mental fog you live in
- Improving your "sleep health" (i.e. actually sleeping through the night.)
- Getting consistent with your health routines (meal planning, cooking, working out, planning, etc.)
- Learning to eat better foods and finally overcome your food cravings and addicitons
2. DECIDE TO TAKE MASSIVE (not passive) ACTION!
- We'll get more into taking Massive Action in another email.
- But for now, just DECIDE your'e going to do something about your health!
3. Do a "Thought Download" on this decision:
Write/Type your TOP HEALTH GOAL at the top of a piece of paper
Set a timer for 5 minutes and write/type down EVERYTHING that comes to your mind regarding this goal
(Pro Tip: don't hold back!) Just let it ALL out... this will really help you to see what's going on inside your mind and help you make a plan to keep those thoughts from sabotaging your efforts later.
